About GSG-NAB Japan

The GSG is a global network, with 33 nations plus the EU as members, which aims at promoting impact investing in partnership with financial institutions, governments, international organizations, businesses, and other entities around the world.

GSG-NAB Japan was established in 2014 as GSG’s national advisory board in Japan. It contributes to the development of the market and ecosystem for impact investing in collaboration with practitioners and experts in diverse fields, including financial, business, social, and academic institutions. GSG-NAB Japan’s activities revolve around three pillars of: research and publication, awareness-raising, and networking.

Key Milestones

  • July 2014

    The G8 Social Impact Investment Taskforce National Advisory Board was established. Later, the name was changed to The Japan National Advisory Board, the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (GSG-NAB Japan) to align with the name change of GSG Headquarters.

  • September 2014

    Published its first report “Impact Investment: The Invisible Heart of Markets.” 
    The launch of report was accompanied with the first symposium titled, “Frontiers of Financial Innovation to Solve Social Issues.”

  • May 2015

    Invited Sir Ronald Cohen at GSG to hold a two-day symposium “Social Impact Investment Symposium.”

  • June 2015

    Published the “Proposal for the Expansion of Impact Investing 2015” which outlines the measures to promote social impact investment in Japan

  • June 2016

    Published “Manual for Social Impact Measurement” and “Social Impact Measurement Tool Sets by Sector.”

  • September 2016

    Published the first “Current State of Social Impact Investment in Japan.” Since then, GSG-NAB Japan annually publishes this report to introduce current state of impact investing in Japan.

  • February 2018

    Held “Social Impact Investment Forum 2018”

  • July 2018

    Launched the G20 Working Group to promote advocacy activities at the G20 Osaka Summit in 2019.

    The initiatives of the working group resulted in reference to impact investing and innovative financing mechanisms in the leaders’ declaration and the speech by the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the G20 Osaka Summit.

  • May 2019

    Published a proposal that identifies issues that need to be addressed by capital markets and outlines recommendations for solutions. The report was based on the activities by the Social Equity Finance Working Group (currently the Social Measurement Study Working Group) of GSG-NAB Japan.

  • September 2019

    Held “Social Impact Investment Forum 2019 Post-G20: Potential of Innovative Finance for Achieving the SDGs”

    More than 250 people participated in the Social Impact Investment Forum 2019

    Published “Proposal for the Expansion of Impact Investing 2019”

    Held “Impact Investing Roundtable” together with the Financial Services Agency of Japan
